About Afoma

Afoma Mbara Mpi

grew up in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.  At age 17, she moved to London and, shortly thereafter, to Chicago to pursue her post primary education.  Her educational pursuits ultimately diverged from what was originally intended.  In lieu of a profession as a physician, Afoma holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Biology & Psychology, Masters in Business Administration (M.B.A.), Masters in International Taxation (LL.M.) and Juris Doctorate (J.D.).  She is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

She has worked in industry for more than thirty years.  For eleven of those years, she served as an attorney where her practice focused primarily on international corporate tax law and structured finance transactions for U.S. Fortune 100 multinationals. As a result, she has lived in multiple countries and has traveled extensively.

2012 was a turning point when she met her piano teacher, Anthony Aviguetero.  Already disillusioned with the corporate path, she discovered that learning piano composition and classical music repertoire, a powerful form of expression, made a range of human emotions more accessible. It was her introduction to the synthesis of reason and emotion and to the questioning of the ideals of individual expression and freedom.

In 2015, Afoma was introduced to Kundalini Yoga & Meditation as taught by Yogi Bhajan, an event which changed the course of her life. Exploring yoga and meditation was entirely consistent with her endeavor to understand unresolved questions and feelings of lack and unsatisfactoriness that she experienced in her corporate career.  “In my work as an attorney, my most jarring experiences were those instances where I had to ineffectively deal with the swift but painful shift in emotions stemming from disappointments of societal expectations and/or the need for external validation.” Over the next couple of years, she trained and received teacher certification for Kundalini Yoga & Meditation as well as for Sound Healing and, in 2017, began teaching yoga & meditation.

In 2019, she had a profound inner awakening and, over the next several years, the realization of her true nature as she experientially explored the mind, the body, and the sense of separation.

Afoma is the author of “Pilgrimage to Nowhere, A Journey to Spiritual Enlightenment.” Today, she lives in Los Angeles and holds meditation gatherings that incorporate sound baths as a holistic healing modality.  “For me, life is now an adventure that includes nurturing personal meditation practices for wellness, mental clarity, and optimal health for all.”

Her meditation gatherings are not confined to any spiritual traditions, religious or philosophical ideologies.  “I’m happy to facilitate a process for individuals to experience the interconnectedness of all life. Our meditation gatherings provide an opportunity to cultivate inner stillness.  They are an open invitation to be present; a dive into awareness and knowing. It’s a journey and a potential shift from existential burden to experiential bliss.
